Abstract

The objectives of this research were to explore whether or not the use of movie ‘media’ improved the students’ pronunciation ability and to find out the students’ interest toward the use of movie in teaching pronunciation. This research applied quasi-experimental design in experimental class and control class. The population of this research was the sixth semester English students of IAIN Palopo in academic year 2016/2017. The sample was class D and class B, Which consist of 50 students. This research used purposive sampling. The researcher chose two classes of the sixth semester English students of IAIN Palopo as the experimental class with the control class. The two classes were given treatment. The experimental class was treated by using movie while the control class was treated by conventional method without movie. The instruments were used pronunciation test and questionnaire. Pronunciation test used to obtain data of students’ pronunciation achievement through movie. Questionnaire used to collect data of the students’ interest in teaching pronunciation through movie. The result of data analysis showed that the students’ ability was significantly improved. It was proved by the mean score of the students in pretest of experimental class is 58.67 which was greater than the mean score of the students’ posttest, that is82 Furthermore, the t-test indicates that the use of movie significantly improved the students’ ability. The data analysis from questionnaire also showed that the degree of students’ interest was occupied strongly positive category. Based on the data analysis, the researcher concluded that the use of movie interest the sixth semester English student of IAIN Palopo, so the movie can be one media to use in pronunciation teaching process.
