Abstract

ABSTRACT The objectives of this research were to find out (1) The distinct uses of pronoun “we”, in terms of references and meanings, by EFL teachers in classroom interaction (2) The teacher’s reasons for using pronoun “we” in classroom interaction, and (3) Whether the use of pronoun “we” by EFL teachers can affect the teacher-student relationship. This research employed qualitative research design and applied discourse analysis method in analyzing the teacher’s utterances. The participants of this research were two English teachers and the students of Accounting Program at SMKN 4 Makassar. The data were collected by using audio recording and interview. The result of the research showed that (1) the teachers used pronoun “we” that refers to six different referential values: speaker and more than one addressee, speaker and more than one third party, speaker and indefinite group (humankind), “we” indicating “you”, “we” indicating “I”, and “we” indicating “they” (2) Both teachers have different reasons for using pronoun “we”: the first teacher used pronoun “we” to establish close relationship with the students and to create enjoyable environment, while the second teacher used pronoun “we” to show politeness to the students (3) Teachers and students had different perspective on how the use of pronoun “we” can affect teacher-student relationship: both teachers agree that using pronoun “we” can help them establish good rapport with the students, on the other hand, most students think that when teacher used pronoun “we”, they feel like they are not alone because the teacher is going through the learning process with them. In conclusion, the teachers used pronoun “we” that contains different referential values with the purpose of establishing close relationship with the students and showing politeness. Also, both teachers and most of the students think that the use of pronoun “we” in classroom interaction can positively affect teacher-student relationship.
