Abstract

This research aimed to analyze: (1) the types of Discourse Markers used by the fourth semester students of Islamic State University Makassaron their speaking interaction, (2) the functions of discourse markers used by the fourth semester students of Islamic State University Makassar on speaking interaction, and (3) Discourse Markers which were most frequently used on speaking interaction. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method. There were 10 respondents of the fourth semester students of English Education Department of Islamic State University Makassar which selected by purposive random sampling. The research data were collected by using a recording instrument. The recording consisted of three different topics; they were students’ interpreting, students’ critical review, and students’ teaching and learning experience. The data were analyzed qualitatively. The first important finding from this research was aboutthe types of Discourse Markers used by the fourth semester students of Islamic State University Makassar in the three kinds of different topics. There were 87 types of subclasses DMs used by the students. The second important findingwas there are fivecategories of functions used by the students in speaking interaction; they were contrastive markers, inferential markers, elaborative markers, additional subclasses markers, and eeeee and ehmm Discourse Markers which had different function. The last important finding from this research was the Discourse Markers which were frequently used on the students speaking interaction; andas the part of elaborative markers was the most frequently used on the students speaking interaction in the three types of topics that were given. In interpreting topic, and occurring 194 times and having 41.81%, while in critical review topic, and occurring 35 times and having 23.65%, and in the teaching and learning experiences topic, and occurring 193 times and having 42.89% within the total number of occurrences of DMs. Despite the fact that DMs can create a smooth talk or make the conversation more natural, the students should be able to use DMs wisely in term of fluency and coherence measured in the students’ speaking interaction.
