Abstract

ABSTRACT . 2016. . (Supervised by Djamiah Husain and Sukardi Weda) The objectives of the research are (1) to identify the beliefs of the second year students of SMA Negeri 1 Sinjai concerning language learning, (2) to identify the language learning strategies those are frequently used by the second year students of SMA Negeri 1 Sinjai, (3) to find out the level or category of English achievement of the second year students of SMA Negeri 1 Sinjai, and (4) to find out whether or not there is any significant correlation among students’ beliefs about language learning, language learning strategies used and English achievement of the second year students of SMA Negeri 1 Sinjai. This research applied a correlational research which deals with two predictors and one criterion variable. The population of this research was the second year students of SMA Negeri 1 Sinjai, consists of five classes..The sample was taken by using proportional stratified random sampling technique. Therefore, the sample consisted of 64 students. The data of this research were collected through SILL( Strategy Inventory for Language Learning) questionnaire by Oxford (1990), BALLI (Beliefs about Language Learning Inventory) questionnaire by Horwitz (1987), and English achievement test. The data were analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics through SPSS program version 20 for windows. Referring to the statistical results, the findings of this research shows that (1)motivation and expectations are the strongest belief that demonstrated by the second year students of SMA Negeri 1 Sinjai concerning language learning. They believe that the motivation and expectations are the stronger factors influencing the success of their English language learning. (2) The overall strategy use fall within the range of medium use. Social and metacognitive strategies are the frequently strategies used by the students. (3) The students’ English achievement based on the result of the achievement test is classified in high grade point average or high-achieving achievement level and (4) There was not any significant correlation between beliefs about language learning and language learning strategies used simultaneously with English achievement, where the result of partial correlation analysis shows that the correlation coefficient r = .088 at p > 0.05. The findings of this research can be a valuable resource to consider appropriate ways of using students’ perceptions to improve English teaching and learning process.
