Abstract

The objectives of this research were to give descriptive account of: (1) the transactional expressions used by the teacher to manage the classroom activities at the beginning of the lesson, in the running of the class, and at the end of the lesson,(2) the students’ understandingto the transactional expressions used by the teacher in managing the classroom activities, and (3)the management talk (transactional expression) whichgavebenefit for students.This research employed a descriptive qualitative method by using a discourse analysis which was concerned with the description and analysis of spoken interaction.The subjects of this research wereoneEnglish teacher and twenty two students at the Seventh Grade of Aof SMPN 2 Watamponein academic year 2014/2015.The research data were collected by using three kinds of instruments namely: (1) observation that entailed video recording and observation sheet, (2) interview entailed audiorecording, and (3) questionnaire. The observation and interview instruments were usedto get the data about the management talk used by the teacher. The questionnaire was employed to know thestudents’ understanding about the transactional expressions which were used by the teacher and to know the transactional expressions which gave benefit to the students. The results of the data analysis showed that the management talk used by the teacher were classified into three phases of classroom activities, namely: (1) beginning the lesson that consisted of the stages as follows: (a) entering the classroom, (b) everyday greeting, (c)taking the register, and (d) getting down to start; (2) running the class that consisted of the stages as follows: (a)beginning with revision, (b)starting something new, (c) telling the objectives, (d) making things clear, (e)sequencing activities, (f) checking progress, and (g) taking turns; (3) ending the lesson which consisted of the stages as follows: (a) checking the time, (b)stopping work, (c) setting taking home assignment, (d)making announcement, (e) ending or closing the lesson, (f) saying good bye, and (g) clearing the class. Mostly the transactional expressions used by the teacher in eachstage of each phase of learning activities were understood by the students. The management talk used by the teacher also mostlygave benefit to the students.It can be concluded that the teacher used some transactional expressions of each the phase of learning activities.Most of the transactional expressions used were understood by the students and gave benefit to the students to make the lesson running smoothly.
