Abstract
ABSTRACT Nur Fitrah Aliyah. Needs analysis of English Teaching Material for Automotive Mechanical Engineering Department of SMKN 2 Barru (supervised by Baso Jabu and H. Kaimauddin). This study deals with technical English teaching material for Vocational High School, in order to assist Indonesian Technical development, and anticipate the challenge of globalization era. This study aims at finding the student’s perception on English materials they learn at vocational school; to find out whether the English teaching materials given at automotive mechanical Engineering department of SMKN 2 Barru graduates fulfill their needs at work; to describe teacher perception in relation to the English teaching materials at automotive mechanical engineering department of SMKN 2 Barru; to describe officer’s perception on the graduates of automotive mechanical engineering department of SMKN 2 Barru. Both field and library research were applied in this study. The respondents were the second grade student of automotive mechanical engineering department, graduates, teachers, officers. The finding of this research shows that students apparently need more specific English materials, which are related to their major study at vocational school rather than general English, they thought that the teacher should implement more effective and suitable English teaching methods and approaches in teaching. From graduates needs, they pointed out that most of the English materials they learned were irrelevant with the current needs at their work places, graduates perceive that English register is urgently needed. Teacher’s point of view shows that the students were not interested in grammar-based English materials, the syllabus did not consist of specific material related to the student’s major study. Officers perceive that employees with English skills were definitely needed, however they realized that most of their employees had insufficient English skill. They also motivate the employees to improve their English. ABSTRAK NUR FITRAH ALIYAH. Analisis Kebutuhan Materi Pengajaran Bahasa Inggris pada Jurusan Otomotif di SMKN 2 Barru (dibimbing oleh Baso Jabu dan H.Kaimuddin). Studi ini mengenai materi pengajaran Bahasa Inggris untuk sekolah menengah kejuruan, untuk membantu perkembangan teknologi Indonesia , dan mengantisipasi tantangan era globalisasi. Studi ini bertujuan untuk menyingkap persepsi siswa tentang materi Bahasa Inggris yang mereka pelajari di SMKN 2 Barru; untuk mengetahui apakah materi bahasa Inggris yang diberikan di jurusan otomotif SMKN 2 Barru memenuhi kebutuhan alumni di tempat kerja; untuk menjelaskan persepsi guru bahasa Inggris tentang materi pengajaran bahasa Inggris pada jurusan otomotiv di SMKN 2 Barru; untuk mengetahui persepsi officer terhadap alumni SMKN 2 Barru jurusan otomotif yg telah bekerja. Kedua penelitian lapangan dan kepustakaan dilakukan pada studi ini. Responden adalah siswa tingkat dua jurusan otomotif, alumni, guru bahasa Inggris, officer. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa siswa lebih membutuhkan materi bahasa Inggris khusus, yang berhubungan dengan jurusan mereka dari pada bahasa Inggris umum, mereka ingin pengajar seharusnya mengimplementasikan metode dan pendakatan pengajaran yang lebih efektif. Untuk alumni, mereka melihat sebagian besar dari materi bahasa Inggris yang mereka dapatkan di sekolah tidak relevan dengan kebutuhan saat ini di tempat kerja, istilah-istilah otomotif sangat dibutuhkan. Dari sudut pandang guru menunjukkan bahwa siswa tidak tertarik di materi grammar, silabus tidak mencakup materi khusus untuk tiap jurusan. Dari Oficer menunjukkan bahwa pegawai denagn kemampuan bahasa Inggris pastinya dibutuhkan, namun mereka menyadari bahwa sebagian besar pegawai mereka memiliki kemampuan bahsa Inggris yang tidak memadai. Mereka juga memotivasi pegawai mereka untuk mengembangkan bahasa Inggris mereka.
