Abstract
ABSTRACT This research compared two techniques, Mind Mapping and Semantic Mapping in teaching reading comprehension. The objective of this research was to prove which technique (Mind Mapping or Semantic Mapping) is more effective to enhance the reading comprehension of the second graders of SMAN 5 Makassar and to prove which technique (Mind Mapping or Semantic Mapping) is more effective to enhance the interests of the second graders of SMAN 5 Makassar. This research employed experimental design which involved two experimental classes. The experimental class one was taught by using Mind Mapping and the experimental class two was taught by using Semantic Mapping. The instruments of this research were reading test and questionnaire of interests. The population of this research was the second graders of SMAN 5 Makassar. This research took 72 students as the sample. XI IPA1 was experimental class one and XI IPA2 was experimental class two. The result of this research showed that the students’ reading comprehension which was taught by using Mind Mapping is higher than the students which were taught by using Semantic Mapping. It was proven by the mean score of the students in Mind Mapping class was 84.00 higher than the mean score of the students in Semantic Mapping class 76.97. The result of the students’ interest showed that Mind Mapping was higher than Semantic Mapping. Therefore, H1 (alternative hypothesis) of this research which said Mind Mapping was more effective than Semantic Mapping to enhance students’ reading comprehension achievement was accepted.
