Abstract

ABSTRACT ROSDIAWATI, 2020. The Ability to Distinguish between Anecdotal Texts and Exposition Texts of Grade X Students at MAN Enrekang (supervised by Akmal Hamsa and Mayong Maman). The study aims to discover (1) the ability to distinguish between the form of anecdotal text structure and the exposition text of grade X students at MAN Enrekang, (2) the ability to distinguish between the characteristics of anecdotal text and exposition text of grade X students at MAN Enrekang, and (3) the ability to distinguish between the form of linguistic rules of anecdotal text and exposition text of grade Xstudents at MAN Enrekang. This study is a quantitative research. There are three variables in this study, namely students' ability to distinguish between anecdotal and exposition text structures, students' ability to distinguish between the characteristics of anecdotal text and exposition text, students' ability to distinguish between anecdotal and exposition text language rules. The population of the study were students of grade X at MAN Enrekang with 190 students. The sample employed random sampling technique and obtained 61 students. The determination of the sample was based on the steps that had been determined through the random sampling technique which was divided into two groups, namely class X MIPA3 and class X IPS3. Class X MIPA3 with the total of 33 students and class X IPS3 with the total of 28 students. The measurement instrument used was a test. The instrument was validated by expert lecturers. The data obtained were analyzed by employing descriptive analysis. The results of the study reveal that (1) there are still many students who do not understand the skills to distinguish between anecdotal texts and exposition texts based on the form of structure, the characteristics, and the form of language rules, and (2) the scores obtained by students are vary.
