Abstract

The study aims at describing the ability of solving mathematics problem of students o MTs Syekh Yususf Gowa of academic year 2018/2019 based on Polya’s steps viewed from adversity quotient, namely climber type and camper type. The study is descriptive research with qualitative approach. The subjects were four students chosen based on questionnaire of adversity response profile scores and obtained two subjects with climber types and two subjects with camper types and their willingness to volunteer included as a consideration in choosing the subjects. Afterwards, the researcher gave test of problem solving ability on SPLDV material and comparison as well as conducted interview to each of the subject. Data validity employed triangulation method. The test analysis on mathematics problem solving ability referred to fopur steps of problem solving by polya, namely understanding the problem, devising the plan, carrying out the plan, and looking back. Data analyses were conducted through several steps, namely data reduction, data presentation,verification and conclusion. The result of study reveal that (1) problem solving abilities of students with climber types in their ability to conduct the steps of understanding the problem, devising the plan, carrying out the plan, and looking back are they are able to make conclusion but unable to recheck the correctness of the answer, (2) problem solving abilities o studens with camper types are they are able to conduct the steps understanding the problem, devising the plan, carrying out the plan, (3) the difference of problem solving abilities of students in each of adversity quotientt type is the climber type, they are able to solve the problems by following all of polya’s steps; whereas, students with adversity quotient camper type are able to solve three steps of polya’s, namely understanding the problem, devising the plan, carrying out the plan Keywords: problem solving ability, polya’s steps, adversity quotient
