Abstract

This study aimed to find out whether or not the font sizes of text affectthe students’ reading comprehension. This study employed descriptive quantitative method. The population of this study was 540 students. The sample was taken randomly, namely the second grade students in academic year 2017/2018 which consisted of 30 students at SMK Negeri 5 Makassar.Six reading texts with different font size and font type were used to test the students. The number of words of each text was around 300-350 words. The reading texts consisted of 10 reading questions to determine the reading comprehension of students. The data were analysed by using descriptive statistics on SPSS for windows 20.0 program. The result of this research showed that most of the students comprehend the reading text by using font 12pt, 14pt (TNR/Arial). It is supported by the mean score of students’ reading comprehension, where the mean score of font 12pt, 14pt (TNR/Arial) were higher than font 10pt (TNR/Arial). Further, the values of t-test and t-table result shows that t-test was higher than t-table (6.23, 6.62 (TNR), 5.09, 6.56 (Arial)> 2.045).It indicated that there was significant difference performance of the students on reading text by using different font size.In other words, font size affects the students’ reading comprehension. Based on the data above, it concluded that there wassignificance difference on students’performance in reading text by using different font size. The final result of this research shows that the larger font size of the text, then the students will increasingly comprehend the content of the text.
