Abstract

ABSTRACT This study addresses the phenomena of body language employed by students to respond their teacher talk in Speaking Class at UIN Alauddin Makassar in Academic Year of 2015-2016. The three aims of this study are: (1) to figure out the kinds of body language employed by students to comment talk performed by their lecturer in speaking class, (2) to find out the reasons of using body language, and (3) to find out the implications of using body language on students’ speaking performance. The data were analysed by means of descriptive-qualitative research where the instruments to collect them were by all means of observation and interview. The observation was held during five meetings while the interview was only run at the last meeting. The study results coined that the students used several body languages in the classroom interaction. To specify, the students did gesture by means of scratching nose, scratching cheek, touching head, holding right arms, being polite. Additionally, they dealt with postures including emblems, hand-shake, clenching hands, standing calm. Furthermore, they also utilized actions such as small laugh, spontaneous laugh, genetic, environment actions, waving hands. The students did facial expression where they expressed sadness, happiness, curiosity, interest, excitement, and soon. Moreover, it was also found that the students performed various eye contacts and body movements which showed open and close channels and interested feeling. Following this, though few students regarded that they did body language as unintentionally and naturally, most considered that the main reason to use body language accompanying their spoken language is to clear and to strengthen the meaning of their verbal language. In similar words, to interact the listeners was also one reason to use those various body signals. In regard with the implications, additionally, most students agreed that body language is so much influential and bring positive impacts towards their verbal language. In fact, students felt relax and easy to organize and communicate their ideas using body language. Moreover, it was thought that body language psychologically enhances their self-confidence while speaking. Eventually, body language was so routinely used in the speaking activity in order to force and clear the verbal language which then effectively encouraged the speakers’ self-confidence.
