Abstract

The objectives of the research are (1) to find out the speaking learning strategies of a successful English learner (2) to find out the effect of speaking learning strategy used by a successful English learner. The researcher conducted qualitative method. The data resource for the research were a successful English learner at UIN Alauddin Makassar. The instrument of the research consisted of observation, interview, and documentation. In analyzing the data, the researcher used the Model of Miles and Huberman (1994). The results showed that, (1) the researcher found the speaking learning strategies used by a successful English learner are practicing, involving social interaction, using keywords, opening dictionary, using of synonym, seeing the context, asking someone, memorizing, making mapping, summarizing the material,taking benefit from teacher strategy, and using appropriate media. (2) the effect of speaking learning strategies used by a successful English learner in speaking are creating learner active in learning, creating learner more positive thinking, developing learner’s self-confidence and increasing the learner’s motivation.
