Abstract

The objectives of the research were (1) to find out the use of management talks that male and female teacher in three phases of classroom interaction; (2) to find out the differences of management talk of male and female teachers in the three phase of classroom interaction; (3) to find out the similarities of management talk that male and female teacher in the three phases of classroom interaction. This research applied descriptive qualitative research. The subjects of the research were two teachers of SMPN 40 Makassar, one male teacher as Teacher A and one female as teacher B. The data was collected through audio recording and interview. The results of the research were : (1) there were fifteen language types of management talk used by male teacher while there were eleven language types of management types used by female teacher, (2) there were some differences of teacher management talk between male and female teachers that appeared in the three phases of classroom interaction, (3) the similarity between male and female teachers when beginning the class namely : everyday greeting and taking the register, two language functions when running of the class namely making things clear/checking students understanding and checking progress, and two language function when ending of the class namely stopping the activities and saying goodbye. It was concluded that male teacher had better management talk than female teacher in terms of the three phases of classroom interaction. It was also found that there were some differences and similarities of teacher management talk used between male and female teachers that appeared in classroom interaction.
