Abstract

Yuliana A. Mansur Akil Abdul Halim State University of Makassar Abstract This research aimed at giving description about the certified teachers of English and their professional competence which focused on some important points namely; the ability to master the material deeply; plan the lesson; select the material; use the instructional media; understanding the students and managing the classroom. The method employed in this research was descriptive evaluative method. Technique used in selecting the participants was purposive sampling technique. The participants of this research were three certified teachers of English. The instruments used in collecting the data were observation and interview. The data gained were analyzed qualitatively. The result of the research shows that the three certified teachers of English have different competence in term of professional competence. In terms of mastering the material all the three teachers master the material taught well. The terms of presenting the material systematically the only the teacher is capable in that term is teacher I. the next point is planning the lesson the three teachers have different consideration in planning the lesson. Teacher I considered the language procedure, media used and time allocation while teacher II noticed the facilities provided. Teacher III formulated the lesson plan based on the syllabus. In selecting material all three teachers considered the students’ ability. Teacher I has other consideration such us the students’ need and the students’ prior knowledge whereas teacher III needed to notice the basic and standard competence. Using instructional media in teaching was implemented by teacher I. He used a variety of instructional media Different from teacher II and III, the only media they used is handbook. In addition, some efforts done by the teachers in developing their professional competence are by joining training, seminar, workshop, self development by reading many books and learning from the internet while some factors supporting the certified teachers of English in implementing their professional competence.
