Abstract
Anugrahwaty Sarif. 2017. Using Vocabulary Self-collection Strategy (VSS) to Increase the Vocabulary Mastery of the Tenth Grade Students of SMA Negeri 16 Makassar. A Thesis. English Department. Faculty of Languages and Literature State University of Makassar (supervised by A. Qashas Rahman and Maemuna Muhayyang). The objective of the research was to find out whether or not the use of vocabulary self-collection strategy (VSS) can increase students’ vocabulary mastery. The researcher applied pre-experimental method with one group pre-test and post-test design. The population of the research was 300 students of the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 16 Makassar academic year 2016/2017. The total sample of the research was 30 students. It was taken by using cluster random sampling. Vocabulary test is given in group in pre-test and post-test to know the students’ vocabulary mastery before and after treatment. The researcher used t-test analysis. The result of the data analysis showed that the use of vocabulary self-collection strategy (VSS) increased the tenth grade students’ vocabulary mastery of SMA Negeri 16 Makassar. The value of t-test (5.928) was greater than t-table (2.045) and the degree of freedom (df)= 29. It means that the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted. It was concluded that vocabulary self-collection strategy (VSS) was effective to increase the vocabulary mastery of the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 16 Makassar.
