Abstract

ABSTRACT The study aims at comparing the effectiveness based on (1) students’ activities, (2) Students’ motivation, and (3) learning outcomes of students who were taught by using guided inquiry learning method and PQ4R in grade X IPA (Natural Sciences) at SMAN 5 Makassar. The type of this study is quasi-experimental design. The research population of the study is grade X SMAN 5 Makassar which consists of 7 classes. Samples are taken by employing random sampling technique and obtain grade X MIPA 6 and grade X MIPA 7. Data collections employ observation sheet on learning implementation, observation sheet on students’ activity, learning test, and questionnaire of students’ motivation. Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis and inferential analysis. The results of the study reveal that the students’ activity in learning by applying guided inquiry learning method is in active category with the mean score 3.44. The learning outcoming in learning Mathematics is in high category with the mean score 86.6970 with standard deviation 7.05994. the average normality gain of learning outcomes is in high category, the students’ motivation on the application of guided inquiry learning method is in positive category with the mean score 3.30 and for PQ4R learning, the students’ activity is in active category with the mean score 3.11. the learning outcomes in Mathematics is in high category with the mean score 83.2286 and standard deviation 5.61031. the average of normality gain of learning outcomes is in high category, the students’ motivation on the application of PQ4R is in positive category with the mean score 3.41. thus, conclusion of the study is the learning outcomes of students who were taught by using guided inquiry learning method is higher than the learning outcomes of students who were taught by using PQ4R in grade X IPA at SMAN 5 Makassar.
