Abstract

This research is a mix method research with quantitative and qualitative approaches which aims at describing the critical thinking process of students of mathematics education in solving integral calculus problems based on Adversity Quotient (AQ). The research subjects were the students of Mathematics Education Program Study consisted of: 2 students with climber type, 2 students with camper type, and 2 students with quitters type. The research instruments were the researcher herself as the main instrument and the supporting instruments, namely Adversity Quotient quetionnaire, Mathematics problem solving test, and interview guidance. Data were collected by conducting analysis of the results of questionnaire, test, and interview. There is positive correlation between AQ and critical thinking ability of students of Mathematics Education with Pvalue (2-tailed) = 0.042 <α = 0.05. The students critical thinking process in formulating the problem stage, the climber type students identified the facts, understood the problems, and determined information obtained accurately and clearly. In understanding the problems, the climber students needed relatively short time as well as the camper type students. In contrast, the quitter type students showed the known information in the question but less understood the intended information. The subjects also nedeed relatively longer time. In giving argument stage, the climber type and camper type students conducted silent activiy while remembering the questions and teacher’s discussion related to self integral material when seeking the conclusion of the problems to determine the formula of solution to be applied the question: whereas, the quitter type students conducted less meaningful thinking activity because they merely tried to solve the problems quicly. In analyzing and deciding stage, the climber type and the camper type students used concept, factoring, perfect quadrate, derivate and the number line, and the quitter type students only able to use integral exampel without using derivate concept Keywords: Critical Thinking Process, Adversity Quotient (AQ), Critical Thinking correlation and AQ, Integral Problems
