THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SPIRITUALITY AND PARENTAL ACCEPTANCE OF PARENTS WITH AUTISM CHILD (maulany.elfath@gmail.com) Ahmad Razak Nur Afni Indahari Faculty of Psychology State University of Makassar Jl. A. P. Pettarani, Makassar, 90222 Abstract Parents who have children with autism going through depressive phase that may lead to rejection if parents not dealt with, on the one hand parents believed the presence of God (spirituality) will help them to go through difficult times in parenting their children with autism. This study aims to determine the relationship between spirituality and parental acceptance of parents with autism child. Sampling technique used in this study was accidental sampling (N=43). Spirituality is measured by the Daily Spiritual Experience Scale (DSES) Indonesian version by Lynn Underwood and parental acceptance measured by Parent Parent Acceptance-Rejection Questionairre (Parent PARQ) short version by Rohner and Cournoyer which is adapted by Irwanto. The data analyzed by Spearman correlation with SPSS 16.0 for Windows. The results shows the the relationship between both of variables is ρxy = 0,033 with significance value p = 0.029 <0.05. The results indicate that individuals with high level of spirituality tend to have high level of parental acceptance. The result of the study can be useful to develop psychological intervention esspecially in spiritual method, to help parents with high level of parental rejection, however the study with larger samples is needed.
