Abstract

This research aimed at finding out (1) the types of code switching and code mixing used by the teachers as instructional language strategies in English class and (2) the functions of code switching and code mixing as teachers’ instructional language strategies in English class.This research applied descriptive design and focused on two English teachers of MTsN 1 Makassar as the subject of the research. The data collection was done through observation and interview. The results of this research showed that there were three types of code switching used by the teacher as instructional language strategies, namely; tag switching, inter-sentential switching and intra-sentential switching. From three types of code switching, the dominant type of code switching used by the teachers in English class was inter-sentential switching, followed by intra-sentential switching while tag switching was less used compared to the three types of code switching. And also there were three types of code mixing used by the teacher as instructional language strategies, namely; insertion, alternation and congruent lexicalization. The dominant type of code mixing used by the teachers in English class was insertion, followed by alternation while congruent lexicalization was less used compared to the three types of code mixing. In addition, the research findings also showed that the functions of teachers’ code switching were to discuss, ask question, explain or redirect, translate, give instruction and to check for understanding. Answering a question, showing the teachers’ feelings, flow of the conversation and emphasizing were new function of code switching that has been found in this research. While the functions of teachers’ code mixing were referential, directive, and expressive. Keywords: code switching, code mixing, teachers’ instructional language
