Abstract

Social interaction among peers became fundamental to be scrutinized especially in the secondary educational context which determined the atmosphere of the classroom acceptance and the positive relationship. Furthermore, sociometric status refers to the measurement to classify the relationship of individual among peers or groups of friends and the measurement indicating whether individual is liked or disliked by his or her peers. The aimed of this study was to explore students sociometric status based on their behaviors especially in the EFL speaking class. There were thirty three students at the eleventh grade of social science class were purposively selected from secondary education to participate in this study. The data were collected through an observation checklist in order get students behaviors. Rating-scale measurement was distributed to the students in order to find out five categorization of sociometric status among peers. Based on the five categorization of sociometric status among students which were popular, controversial, rejected, neglected, and average have proved that the majority of the students especially female students displayed positive behaviors which classified into three level of behaviors and they were highly-positive behaviors (providing assistance, providing guidance, providing direction, providing jokes) and only few male students displayed negative behaviors categorized into highly negative-behaviors (inappropriate behaviors, angry shouting, hitting and medium-negative behaviors (noncompliance, disapproval) in the EFL speaking classroom. In conclusion, all five students sociometric status were reflected in the highly-positive behaviors, highly-negative behaviors and medium- negative behaviors during of the students during the process of learning in the EFL speaking class
