Abstract

ABSTRACT ULFIAH UTAMI. 2014. Increasing Students Motivation in Writing English Using Edmodo Virtual Class (Supervised by Baso Jabu and Nudin Noni) The objectives of this research were to find out (1) whether or not the use of ‘Edmodo’ virtual class increases the motivation of the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Makassar in writing English; whether or not there is orientative, integrative, intrinsic, and extrinsic aspects; and (2) the extent to which ‘Edmodo’ virtual class increases students’ writing achievement This research employed quasi experimental design. This research used two groups, experimental group and control group. The experimental group was taught by using ‘Edmodo’ virtual class and the control group was taught by using conventional way. Each of the groups consisted of 30 students. The sample was taken by using cluster random sampling technique. The data were obtained through writing test and questionnaire, then the data were analyzed through descriptive statistics and inferential statistic (ANCOVA Design; SPSS program version 20). The result gained from the data analysis showed that the use of Edmodo virtual class in writing motivation was not significantly different from the existing way. However, there was one component of motivation which significantly increase the students’ motivation, that was integrative motivation. It was proved by the score of the experimental group in pre-test which was significantly (p<0.05=0.037<0.05) lower than the score of the control group but in post-test the experimental group could made up for the lost score become equal (and not lower) to the score of the control group. The use of Edmodo virtual class in writing achievement was also not significantly different from the non-Edmodo. Even so, there was one component of writing that significantly increased, that was on language use. It was proved by the score of the experimental group in pre-test which was significantly lower (p<0.05=0.012<0.05) than the score of the control group, but in post-test the language use score of both groups could be equal. Proving that generally there were no significant change from pre-test to post-test of both categories, motivation and writing achievement, the researcher then realized that it was because of the lack of time meeting, where the treatment was conducted only in one writing process.
