Abstract

ABSTRACT BAKHTIAR BRISAH, 2014. The Effectiveness of Problem-Based Learning Method in Teaching Speaking to the Third Grade Students of SMK Negeri 1 Pinrang. (Supervised by Muhammad Asfah Rahman and Muhammad Nasiruddin Sainu). The objective of the research were (1) to know whether or not the use of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) method is more effective in increasing the speaking achievement of the third grade students of SMK Negeri 1 Pinrang than the conventional one. (2) to find out the motivation level of the third grade students of SMK Negeri 1 Pinrang in speaking class by using PBL method. The research method employed was quasi experimental. This research assigned two groups, experimental and control group. Each groups consisted of 35 students. The sample was chosen by applying purposive sampling technique. The data obtained through the test were analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistic through SPSS Version 20.00 program. Then the data on the students’ motivation in learning speaking by using PBL method was collected by questionnaire. The research result showed that there was an increasing on the students’ speaking achievement between pretest and post-test in experimental group after treatments. It was proven by the result of the students’ score either in pretest or in post-test. Based on the result of data analysis, there was a significant difference between the result of post-test of experimental group and control group. The mean score of post-test of experimental group was 76.06 higher than the mean score of post-test of control group was only 66.26. The other finding was from the questionnaire showed that the students had high motivation by using PBL method in speaking learning process. This led to the conclusion that the application of PBL method increased the students’ speaking achievement. It means that the use of PBL method in teaching speaking is more effective to increase the students’ speaking achievement.   ABSTRAK BAKHTIAR BRISAH, 2014. Efektifitas metode pembelajaran berbasis masalah dalam pengajaran berbicara kepada siswa-siswi kelas tiga SMK Negeri 1 Pinrang. (Dibimbing oleh Muhammad Asfah Rahman dan Muhammad Nasiruddin Sainu) Penelitian ini bertujuan (1) untuk mengetahui apakah penggunaan metode pembelajaran berbasis masalah lebih efektif atau tidak efektif dari pada metode konvensional untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa-siswi kelas 3 SMK Negeri 1 Pinrang. (2) untuk mengetahui tingkat motivasi siswa-siswi kelas tiga dalam kelas berbicara dengan menggunakan metode pembelajaran berbasis masalah Metode penelitian ini adalah eksperimen semu. Terdiri dari dua kelompok yaitu kelompok eksperimen dan kelompok kontrol. Setiap kelompok terdiri dari 35 siswa. Sampel penelitian dipilih dengan menggunakan strategi purposif. Data kemampuan berbicara siswa dianalisis dengan menggunakan statistic deskriptif dan inferensi melalui program SPSS 20. Data motivasi siswa dalam berbicara dengan menggunakan metode pembelajaran berbasis masalah dikumpulkan melalui angket. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa terjadi peningkatan kemampuan berbicara siswa-siswi antara tes awal dan tes akhir pada kelompok eksperimen setelah diberikan perlakuan. Dibuktikan dengan skor siswa pada tes awal dan tes akhir. Berdasrkan hasil analisis data, ada perbedaan antara skor rata-rata tes akhir pada kelompok eksperimen lebih tinggi (76.06) daripada skor rata-rata pada kelompok kontrol (66.26 ). Hasil analisis melalui angket menunjukkan bahwa siswa memiliki motivasi yang tinggi dalam berbicara melalui penggunaan metode pembelajaran berbasis masalah dalam pembelajaran berbicara. Kesimpulannya adalah, penggunaan metode pembelajaran berbasis masalah dalam pengajaran berbicara lebih efektif untuk meningkatkan pencapaian berbicara siswa.
