Abstract

ABSTRACT Sudirjaya. Needs Analysis of Technical English for Vocational School Students(Supervised by Muhammad Amin Rasyid and Kaimuddin P.) This study was conducted (1) to find out the students’ perception of the role of studying English in VocationalSchool; (2) to disclose the problems encountered by the students in learning technical English; (3) to identify what the students need to know about technical English and the benefits obtained from their technical English knowledge; (4) to identify the technical English register which is commonly found by students at school and in the target situation; and (5) to identify the technical English register that is commonly found by graduates in the target situation. The respondents were students of Vocational School and graduates. The data were collected from the respondents by using questionnaire and interview. The result of the research showedthat although most students claimed that English is very important(87.49%), but their English is very low. Students perceive that both speaking and reading skills are urgently needed for academic career. English material was less relevant; they needed more technical and common English. The main problems in learning technical English were; understanding passive form, compound nouns and technical registers.
