Abstract

ABSTRACT Kalfin Rombe Padati. 2011. Improving the Listening Ability of Students by Using English Songs. A thesis. Faculty of Languages and Literature. State University of Makassar. (supervised by Djamiah Husain and Amra Ariyani). The objective of the research was to find out whether the use of English songs improves the ability of students in listening or not. The writer applied preexperimental method with one group pretest and posttest design. The subject of the research was the first grade students of SMA Hasanuddin Gowa of academic year 2010-2011. The research used total sampling, consists of 43 students. The data were collected through listening test (pretest and posttest). To find out whether the uses of English songs improve the listening ability of senior high school students, the writer uses t-test analysis. The result of the data analysis showed that there was a significant difference between pretest and posttest. It was proven by the value of t-test (23.79) which was greater than the t-table (2.021) with the level of significance (α) = 0.05 and degree of freedom (df) = 42. The mean score of the posttest (57.51) was greater than the mean score of pretest (33.72). Based on the finding and discussion of the study, the writer concludes that the use of English songs can improve listening comprehension of the first grade of SMA Hasanuddin Gowa.
