Abstract

The aim of this study is to analysis students’ errors in proving the propositions in abstract algebra. This study is a qualitative research, especially a case study with tests and interview methods. The subjects in this research are four undergraduates of mathematics study program of state university of Makassar batch 2014. This study shows that students’ errors in proving abstract algebra especially in arranging proof steps are (1) choosing direct proof instead of giving a counterexample to prove the falsity of a proposition, (2) using a non-general example to prove the truth of a proposition, (3) not writing the argumentations before concluding a statement, (4) proving a given information, (5) not writing a clear connection between statements, (6) not writing conclusion based on the proposition, (7) cannot start the proof, (8) not finishing the proof, (9) using implication to connect two non-statement sentences, (10) using the same symbol for the different meanings, and (11) writing an ungiven assumption. Besides that, the errors in applying mathematical concepts are (1) wrong in distinguishing the definition between definition and theorem of subgroup, (2) assuming that a function is a set, (3) wrong in defining an injection, (4) wrong in using mathematical symbol, (5) wrong in choosing element in even set, (6) using a symbol without defining it first, (7) unknowing the definition of group homomorphism, (8) wrong in defining a set, (9) assuming that negative and fraction power are the same, and (10) disability in distinguishing proof by induction and proof by a contradiction. Furthermore, there are three main factors implying students’ errors in proving, they are (1) subject experienced the lack of mathematical concepts, (2) subject experienced the lack of knowledge related to proof techniques, and, (3) subject experienced the lack of training in doing a proof.
