Abstract

This research was an attempt to know the types of verbal-humor used by the teachers in the classroom, the use of verbal-humor can attract students’ motivation, and students’ responses toward the verbal-humor of their teacher. The research design of this thesis was using descriptive qualitative which it investigated the use of verbal-humor attract students’ motivation. The research site of this research was SMAN 12 Cenrana-Maros which is located in Maros regency. There were two data resources. Primary resource was two English teachers as the respondents of the research who taught in different classes, science program and X1. Secondary resource was some literature that related to the theory of verbal-humor and the motivation. The researcher worked with the instrument namely: recording (transcript), observation (field notes), and interview. Procedure of collecting and analyzing the data was observation by video recording and taking some field notes and interview to gain information about students’ responses toward the verbal-humor of their teacher. Technique of data analyzes were data collection of recording by using Miles and Hubberman (1994) data analysis, data collected from field notes, and data collected from interview. The result of this research showed that there were some of the types of verbal-humor used by the teachers of SMAN 12 Cenrana-Maros based on Raskin and Attardo (1991) types of verbal-humor. This was shown in the findings and discussion. The verbal-humor of the teachers can attract students’ motivation based on Eyelet Fishbach (2014) theory of motivation measurements. It was shown from the result of the interview with the students which had been analyzed in findings and discussion. Students’ responses toward the verbal-humor of their teacher could be stated in positive way, they liked it, they were interested, they prefer studying with fun than studying in serious way.
