Abstract

The objectives of this research are to discover the extend to which: (1) the use of fishbone can improve the students’ descriptive writing skill related to the content of writing; (2) the use of fishbone can improve the students’ descriptive writing skill related to the organization of writing; (3) the use of fishbone can improve the students’ descriptive writing skill related to the vocabulary of writing; (4) the use of fishbone can improve the students’ descriptive writing skill related to the language use in writing; (5) the use of fishbone can improve the students’ descriptive writing skill related to the mechanic of writing. This research applied quasi experimental method. The research took place at SMA Negeri 2 Sungguminasa Gowa in 2015/2016 academic year. Sample was selected by using purposive sampling technique. The research covered 62 students as the sample of the research with 31 students in X MIA 3 as experimental class and 31 students class in X MIA 1 as control class. The data were collected through written test from the pre test and post test for both class and the result of the test was analyzed by using SPSS 20.0 program. The results revealed that two components of writing were improved by the application of fishbone method namely content and organization while the other components were not improved. It refers to the probability value (0.052) was higher than significant (α = 0.05). While, the variant score of the five writing components showed that the probability value (0.00) was lower than significant value (α = 0.05), And the mean score of five writing components indicated that organization was higher than others. That leads to the conclusion that (1) the application of fishbone method did not improve the students’ descriptive writing skill, and (2) the highest improvement of the five writing components was organization.
