Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigated the teachers and students’ perception towards the teaching of English oral communication, the teachers and students’ difficulty they come across in oral communication classroom, and the classroom management and interaction in three senior high schools in Kendari, all of which is piloted to the Curriculum 2013. The subjects of the study were three English teachers and three classes of Grade X MIA, with total number of students were approximately 120, including 30 students for an interview. The subjects were decided purposefully since they were within the reach of the writer and because of they were piloted to the Curriculum 2013. The instruments of this study were classroom observation and in depth interview. The data were analysed by using the interactive model of qualitative data analysis by Miles and Huberman (1994). The first important finding of this research is about teachers’ and students’ perception toward the teaching and learning of English oral communication. The research findings show that both teachers and students positively perceive the development of oral communication through Scientific Approach to teaching and its integrated skills lesson along with the language elements. The second important finding is related to the difficulties encountered by teachers and students in the teaching and learning of oral communication. The teachers found it difficult to develop students’ English oral communication skill in two main features, i.e. overcrowded classroom and students’ lack of working or active vocabulary. The students, on the other hand, found it hard to learn English oral communication in three distinctive features, i.e. psychological-based problem, language-based problem, and environmental-based problem. The last important finding deals with classroom management and interaction in oral communication classroom. The classroom management and interaction support the students’ improvement in their speaking ability under communicative task and activity purposefully designed by the teachers and with relevant classroom interaction. The study recommended for further close inquiry into the functions of skill getting and skill using activity and their contributions to increase communicative language acquisition.
