Abstract

ABSTRACT The objectives of the research were (1) to find out whether or not the use of concrete experience to stimulate students’ engagement in learning speaking.(2) To find out whether or not the use of concrete experience stimulate students’ achievement in learning speaking and (3) to find out the students’ perception towards the using of concrete experience in learning speaking. The researcher applied mixed method namely quan-qual. The Population of this research was the the students of senior high school, Nurmilad Boarding School in Wajo regency. The Sample was class X and XI which consist of 35 students. This research used 3 kinds of instruments they were observation sheet, interview guide and audio recording. The result of the qualitative data through observation and interview showed that (1) the use of concrete experience stimulated students’ engagement either behavioral or emotional as well as cognitive engagement, (2) the use of concrete experience improve the students achievement. It was identified by seeing the result of speaking test in which the the mean score of post test was higher than the mean score of pre test. The speaking test result of class X, mean score of pre test 54.63, mean score of post test 72.22(72.22 >54.63). Meanwhile 68.63 > 55.88 of class XI. Based on the result of data analysis, the researcher concluded that: the use of concrete experience was effective to stimulate the students’ engagement; using concrete experience improved the students’ speaking achievement and the students have good perception towards the use of concrete experience in learning speaking.
