This research applied qualitative research design. The participants of the research were the lecturers and the students of second semester English education in STKIP YPUP Makassar who were chosen through purposive sampling. The data were collected by nonparticipant observation, interview and documentation. The data obtained were analyzed in thee phases, namely data reduction, data display and conclusion or verification. The result of the research showed that (1) the lecturers’ perceptions of the language choice indicated that the lecturers employed bilingual approach for monolingual was considered useless. Their ideal language choice was English tended to be used less than Indonesian without the existence of institution’s policy. Regarding the perceptions of classsroom interaction talks, they did have language choices in which English was considered the right choice for the lecturers in asking students’ feeling, praising, giving questions and directions as well as the students’ response for specific category while Indonesian was for joking, using the students’ idea, giving information, criticizing the students’ behavior and the students’ response for open-ended category. (2) The reasons of the lecturers for allowing Indonesian in their talk were related to students’ understanding, sense of the words, saving time and energy, lecturers’ personal feeling, softening the meaning or even no reason while the reasons of using only English in particular talk were related to simple and easy thing, sounding better, making the students get accustomed or the existing materials. (3) The students took monolingual as important thing in English class yet still considered the need of Indonesian in which language rule was needed to apply. They thought the rule of using either English or Indonesian should exist in the classroom. Regarding the ideal of language choices, they preferred more English in the classroom. The students’ language preferences for the teacher and student talk were surprisingly similar to the lecturers’. However, as a whole, they demanded more English exposure in the classroom interaction with inevitable allowance of Indonesian.
