Abstract

ABSTRACT This study explores English learning strategies used by senior high school students covering; the students’ perspectives on their learning strategies in learning English, the students use on their language learning strategies, and the employed learning strategies impact on their learning performance. It employed a descriptive qualitative in nature using phenomena design. Through this method, it is hope more comprehensive and intensive information is obtained from natural setting, with observation, interview protocol, documents recording the students’ speaking grades obtained at SMA Negeri 1 Makassar and SMA Negeri 1 Maros, and speaking learning diaries, as the data collection instruments. The study demonstrates that the students used a wide range of strategies that spread over six strategy groups, favouring metacognitive strategies. The first new strategy belongs to the compensation strategies of the findings in this study, the second new strategies. These are called ‘using a bilingual electronic’ and ‘creating their own sentences’. This new compensation strategy, as one of the findings of this study, the four new strategies belong to the social strategy group. These were called ‘Inquiring and using a peer’s support’, ‘inquiring and using a family’s support’, ‘using social network’, and ‘using louder voice’.The study also demonstrates that the students used strategies mindfully, confidently, effortfully, or persistently. This study raise several implication for the development of theory about language learning strategy use by students at senior high school. The first implication refers to the repertoire of strategies used by the students for language learning strategy. The second implication for theory in the field of language learning strategies pertains to relationship between students’ strategy use and a number of factors; (a) degree of liking English, and (b) family back grounds. This study confirmed both the productive and receptive language skills impacts of strategies. There were two groups of skills that are known and studied in the context of educational process represented in language learning strategies. Despite, the implication of this study addressed to the teachers, this also addressed to the family and the students. The implication is contributing knowledge of the use of English Foreign Language in English learning strategies among students.
