Abstract

ABSTRACT The objectives of the research are to find out (1) kinds of verbal politeness strategies which are used by the teachers in the classroom, and (2) the learners’ responses to the teachers’ verbal politeness. The research employed qualitative research design. The participants of the research were two English teachers and the students of VIIA and VIIB of SMP DISAMAKAN ANGKASA Maros which were taken through purposive sampling. The data of this research was collected by classroom observation, video audio recording and interview. The research findings show that (1) there are four politeness strategies which were commonly used by the teachers, they are, bald on record strategy, positive politeness strategy, negative politeness strategy, and Makassarese-Buginese politeness strategy, and (2) the learners’ responses toward the teacher’s verbal politeness strategies categorized into six most commonly used politeness expressions; task oriented, warning, joke, compliment, apology and questioning. Most of the students gave positive responses on task oriented, joke and compliment, while for the warning, apology and questioning, some students gave positive responses and some of them gave negative responses.
