Abstract

ABSTRACT The objectives of this research were to find out: (1) the range of lexicogrammatical error types in narrative writing which are mostly made by the students of English Department of Muhammadiyah University of Makassar and (2) the possible sources of errors in narrative writing made by the students of English Department of Muhammadiyah University of Makassar. The researcher employed a qualitative descriptive design. The population of this research was the fourth semester students of English Department at Muhammadiyah University of Makassar in 2011/2012 academic year. The sample was the fourth semester students of English Department at Muhammadiyah University of Makassar, class G which consisted of 35 students. This research used cluster random sampling technique. The research data were collected using writing test. Data of the writing test result were analyzed descriptively. The result of the qualitative descriptive data through writing test showed that: (1) the range of lexicogrammatical error types in narrative writing which are mostly made by the student of English Department of Muhammadiyah University of Makassar is syntactic level, (2) the possible sources of error made by the student of English Department of Muhammadiyah University of Makassar are L1 transfer, lack of facilitation of L1, and non-L1 related factors, such as: overgeneralization, false concepts hypothesized, and incomplete application of rule.
