Abstract

This research identified the characteristics of the successful students at nonEnglish study programs, the most dominant language learning strategies used by students of non-English study programs, and the relationship between language learning strategies and academic success. The researcher applied mixed-method research to find out language learning strategies of the successful students at non-Englsh study programs The subjects of this research were 3 students of Islamic education study program at IAIN Palopo. The researcher interviewed the students and gave the questionnaire to them to reveal the characteristics of the successful students and the kind of language learning strategy dominantly used by them. Interview was conducted into 2 meetings. The researcher used semi-structured interview for the students. The researcher conducted the interview by using audio recorder to record students’ statements about the characteristics of the successful students. Furthermore, the questionnaire was conducted in 2 meetings. In the questionnaire, the students chose every statement which is in line with their learning strategies. The result of this research showed the chracteristics of the successful students of non-English study programs at IAIN Palopo consisted of academic leadership, extra-curricular activities, professional practice, academic grades, time dedicated, clear objectives, and family structure. The most dominant language learning strategies used by the students is metacognitive strategies. Furthermore, the relationship between language learning strategies and academic success is the more students employed metacognitive strategies in their learning process, the more successful they are. Lastly, the researcher claimed that ‘teacher’s teaching method’ as the novelty of this research. It can be used as the one factor to know the characteristics of the successful students.
