Abstract

ABSTRACT The research aims at (1) describing the effective methods used by EFL teacher perceived by the students; (2) describing the ineffective methods used by EFL teacher perceived by the students; This research was designed by using qualitative research. The subject was the students of SMP Angkasa Maros. This research applied purposive sampling technique by considering students’ achievement in English semester. The participants of this research were three classes namely class IX A, C, and E of SMP Angkasa Maros in the academic year 2016/2017. The subject of the research were 82 students. The data was collected through class discussion and focus group discussion. In analysing the data, the researcher used qualitative data analysis. The research findings show that (1) there are four effective teaching methods used by EFL teacher in secondary school they are communicative language teaching method, cooperative learning method, audio lingual method, and simulation and games method. The students believed these method can stimulate the students’ activeness and participation in the classroom. (2) there are three ineffective teaching methods used by EFL teacher in secondary school they are lecturing method, grammar translation method, and direct method.
