Abstract

ABSTRACT The objectives of this research are (1) to find out whether the use of folktale movie is effective to improve students’ grammar mastery or not, (2) to examine the students’ attitude towards the use of folktale movie as media in English teaching. This research employed descriptive quantitative method. The populations of this research were the students of the second grade of SMAN 1 Maros of South Sulawesi. There were twenty respondents of experimental group and twenty respondents of control group as well who participated in this research. All subjects and the respondents were selected through cluster random sampling. The experimental group was treated by using folktale movie as teaching media, while the control group was treated by using conventional method as teaching media or without folktale movie. The data of this research was collected by employing pretest, posttest, assignment, and questionnaire. The gained data was analyzed with SPSS version 17.0.The result of the data analysis showed that there was a significant difference between the students’ mean scores who were taught by using folktale movie and without folktale movie. It was proved by the mean scores of the experimental group which were higher than the control group in the post-test of parts of speech, tenses simple past, and past continuous (94.20 > 79.40) and (70.80 > 58.70). The scores of probability value (significant 2-tailed) were lower than the level of significance (0.000 < 0.05) and (0.003 < 0.05). In other words, H1 was accepted and H0 was rejected. The majority of the students (60 percent) responded “positive” to the use of folktale movie as teaching media in the classroom. Their responses to the questionnaire statement indicated that they appreciated the use of folktale movie as teaching media in the class and liked it to be applied in the classroom. It can be concluded that the use of folktale movie as a teaching method was effective to be implemented in class. Keywords: the use of folktale movie, students’ grammar mastery
