Abstract
Abstract: Communication skill is how the EFL teachers communicate in the classroom to give information to the students. Speaking is the condition in which the students are able to produce certain expressions or sentences in English in terms of accuracy, fluency, and comprehensibility. This study aimed to find out and describe (1) the kinds of communication skills used by the EFL teachers of Bosowa International School in the classroom and, and SMA Negeri 2 Makassar and (2) the effects of their communication skills on the students' speaking performance. The study applied qualitative method. The data resources were the teachers' verbal and non-verbal communications applied in class X Science of Bosowa International School and class X10 of SMA Negeri 2 Makassar. In collecting the data, this research employed direct observation, questionnaire, and interview. The researcher found that (1) the verbal communication skills used by the teachers were reflection, questioning, explaining, questioning, explaining, humor and laughter, and feedback. The Non- verbal communication skills used by the teachers were physical appearance, eye contact, facial expression, voice, body posture and gesture, physical space, and active listening. (2) Based on the questionnaire filled by all students in both classes and followed up by interview with ten informants, most students perceived that the ways teacher communicate is effective on their speaking performance, which is the mean score 185.73 for the students of Bosowa International School and 192.53 for the students of SMA Negeri 2 Makassar.
