Abstract

ABSTRACT WONGSO ADI SAPUTRA. Translanguaging in Indonesian University Classroom Context: A Discourse Analysis at One University in South Sulawesi (Supervised by Haryanto Atmowardoyo and Sukardi Weda). This research aimed at finding out (1) how the L1 and the L2 interacted each other in the classroom context, (2) how the lecturers acted toward the L1 and the L2 in the classroom and (3) what was the implication of the translanguaging on TEFL. The research employed descriptive qualitative research design. The subjects were two English lecturers of Muhammadiyah University of Makassar. All of them used Indonesian language in their daily life and in the classroom they used Indonesian language also as their mother tongue and English language as target language. In the research findings there are five types of translanguaging as the way of the L1 and the L2 interacted each other in the classroom that used by the lecturers in teaching and learning process. Those were Inter-Sentential translanguaging which was effective, Intra- Sentential translanguaging which was effective, insertion translanguaging which was effective, congruent-lexicalization translanguaging which was effective and entire translanguaging which was also effective. The data had shown that the lecturers used ten Functions’ of translanguaging as the action toward the L1 and the L2 in the classroom. Those were checking understanding which was effective, Explaining rule of grammar which was effective, Explaining pronunciation and spelling which was not effective, Explaining exercise in the book which was not effective, to co-construct meaning which was effective, Explaining meaning of abstract vocabulary which was effective, Organization classroom setting which was effective too, class management and control which was effective, praising which was not effective and telling jokes/anecdotes which was also effective. Furthermore, The implication of translanguaging in one University of South Sulawesi in Indonesia on TEFL was very useful because it could be used as a method or strategy in explaining English materials, motivating the students to speak, especially for low level students, analizing problem and encourage them to pay attention when the teacher explaining material. Translanguaging Dalam Konteks Kelas di Universitas: Sebuah Analisis Discourse Pada Salah Satu Universitas diSulawesi Selatan (Pembimbing: Haryanto Atmowardoyo and Sukardi Weda). Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan bagaimana (1) interaksi antara bahasa pertama dan bahasa kedua didalam konteks kelas, (2) bagaimana tindakan dosen terhadap bahasa pertama dan bahasa kedua didalam kelas dan (3) apa implikasi translanguaging dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Subjek penelitian adalah dua dosen bahasa Inggris Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar, mereka menggunakan bahasa Indonesia sebagai bahasa sehari-sehari dan pada saat proses belajar mengajarpun mereka juga menggunakan bahasa Indonesia dan bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa target. Peneliti menemukan bahwa ada lima macam jenis translanguaging sebagai interaksi antara bahasa pertama dan bahasa kedua dalam kelas yang digunakan dosen selama proses belajar mengajar. yaitu, Inter-Sentential translanguaging yang penggunaannya efektif, Intra- Sentential translanguaging yang penggunaannya effective, insertion translanguaging yang penggunaannya effective, congruent-lexicalization translanguaging yang penggunaannya effective dan entire translanguaging yang penggunaannya juga effective. Data menunjukkan bahwa dosen menggunakan sepuluh fungsi translanguaging sebagai tindakannya terhadap bahasa pertama dan bahasa kedua didalam kelas yaitu, checking understanding yang penggunaannya effective, explaining rule of grammar yang penggunaannya effective, explaining pronunciation and spelling yang penggunaannya tidak effective, explaining exercise in the book yang penggunaannya tidak effective, to co-construct meaning yang penggunaannya effective, explaining meaning of abstract vocabulary yang penggunaannya effective, organization classroom setting yang penggunaannya effective, class management and control yang penggunaannya effective, praising yang penggunaannya tidak effective and telling jokes and anecdotes. Implikasi translanguaging pada pengajaran bahasa Inggris disalah satu Universitas di Sulawesi Selatan Indonesia adalah sangat berguna karena dapat digunakan sebagai metode atau strategi menjelaskan materi, memotivasi siswa untuk berbicara terutama pada siswa yang memilki kemampuan rendah, analisa masalah, dan mendorong siswa agar lebih konsentrasi saat guru menjelaskan materi.
