Abstract

The study aims at discovering: (1) the difference of the influence of open-ended approach and problem-posing approach on mathematics creative thinking skills of grade VIII students at SMPN (public junior high school) 2 Sungguminasa with a field-dependent cognitive style and (2) the difference of the influence of open-ended approach and problem posing approach on mathematics creative thinking skills of grade VIII students at SMPN 2 Sungguminasa with a field-independent cognitive style. The type of research used in this study is true experimental designs in the form of post-test only control group design. The population of the study were all students of grade VIII at SMPN 2 Sungguminasa which consisted of 11 classes. The research sample was determined by using the cluster double random sampling technique, 2 experimental classes were chosen. Students in the two classes were divided into field-dependent cognitive style students and field-independent cognitive style students as the samples in this study. Data collection methods used in this study were tests and observations. The data obtained were analyzed by using the independent sample ttest to determine the difference of the influence of open-ended approach and problem-posing approach on mathematics creative thinking skills of students in grade VIII at SMPN 2 Sungguminasa with a field-dependent cognitive style and the difference of the influence of open-ended approach and problem-posing approach on mathematics creative thinking skills of students in grade VIII at SMPN 2 Sungguminasa with a field-independent cognitive style. The results of the study reveal that (1) there is no difference of the influence of open-ended approach and problem-posing approach on mathematics creative thinking skills of students in grade VIII at SMPN 2 Sungguminasa with a field-dependent cognitive style with a sig. value 0.662, (2) there is no difference of the influence of open-ended approach and problem-posing approach on mathematics creative thinking skills of students in grade VIII at SMPN 2 Sungguminasa with a field-independent cognitive style with a sig. value 0.276.
