Abstract

ABSTRACT Siti Kiftiah Teachers’ Strategies in Giving Explanations in EFL Classroom (Supervised by Murni Mahmud and Fatimah Hidayahni Amin) This study investigates teachers’ strategies in giving explanation in EFL classroom. The aims of the research were to find out the kinds of language and expression, the functions of language, and the strategies of giving explanations presented by the teachers in EFL classroom. The study used descriptive qualitative which aimed at describing and interpreting the teachers’ strategies in giving explanation. The subjects of the research were two teachers of English from two different schools, SMAS Ummul Mukminin and SMK Muhammadiyah 2 Bontoala Makassar. Data on the teachers’ strategies in giving explanation, including the language, the expressions, the functions of language and teachers’ strategies were collected by using an observation note and interview questions. To analyze the data, data reduction, data display, and conclusion were administered. The study found that: (1) there were three kinds of languages and various expressions of the languages used, namely, target language (English), native language (Indonesian), and Mother tongue (Makasarnese) (2) There were seven language functions which were presented by the teachers, namely, instrumental function, representational function, regulatory function, imaginative function, personal function, interactional function, and heuristic function, and (3) the teachers’ strategies in giving explanation were identifying similarities and differences, summarizing and note taking, reinforcing effort and providing recognition, homework and practice, nonlinguistic representations, cooperative learning, setting objectives, and activating prior knowledge. Based on the findings, it was implied that teachers used various ways to give explanation—(1) different langauges including English for explaining the material, Indonesian for overcoming the limitation in spoken and written language in English, and Makasarnese for joke in the classroom, (2) different functions of languages including instrumental function for giving preferences, representational function for describing topic or material, regulatory function for managing the students’ behavior, imaginative function for creating students’ imagination, personal function for sharing personal feeling, interactional function for maintaining student and teacher interaction, and heuristic function for checking students’ understanding, and (3) identifying similarities and differences, summarizing and note taking, reinforcing effort and providing recognition, homework and practice, nonlinguistic representations, cooperative learning, setting objectives, and activating prior knowledge.
