Abstract

ABSTRACT MALLOMBASI. 2018. Developing Students’ Mastery of Adjective by Using Systemic Approach. (supervised by Mansur Akil and Haryanto). The objectives of this research are (1) to find out whether or not systemic approach can develop students’ mastery of adjective and (2) to find out which of the four elements of adjective (kind, use, form, order) is the most significantly developed by using systemic approach. This research applied quasi experimental. The research took place at Muhammadiyah University of Makassar in 2016/2017 academic year. Sample was selected by using purposive sampling technique. The researcher covered 62 students as the sample of the research with 31 students in class F as experimental class and 31 students in class D as control class. The data was collected through vocabulary test in the pretest and posttest for both classes and the result of the test was analyzed by using SPSS 25.0 program. The application of systemic approach developed the students’ mastery of adjective. It is proven where the mean score in pre test of experimental group was 47.95 and in post test was 75.40. It increased 57.24 %. While in pretest of control group was 44.92 and in post test was 54.60. It increased 21.55 %. Those improvements showed that applying systemic approach developed the students’ mastery of adjective in the experimental group. It is more effective to improve the students’ mastery of adjective. It indicated that the alternative hypothesis (H1) was approved. The element of adjective that dominantly improved is order. The data result proves such conclusion which is based on the data in the table 4.10 that showed that the mean score of order was 84.52 and it was higher among the other elements. That leads to the conclusion in to (1) the application of systemic approach in teaching influenced to the students’ mastery of adjective, and (2) the most significant development of the adjective element was order.
