Abstract

ABSTRACT Idhan Khalid, 2019. Teachers’ Negotiation of Meaning in Teaching Vocabulary; A Case Study at SMPN 1 Watampone. English Education Department, Graduate Program. State University of Makassar. (Supervised by Kisman Salija and Amirullah Abduh) The research was to reveal (1) negotiation of meaning strategies used by teachers in teaching vocabulary, (2) teachers’ purposes of using the negotiation of meaning strategies and (3) students’ perception on the teachers’ negotiation of meaning. The research employed a single-case study design and was conducted at a leading state junior high school in the district of Bone. Two EFL teachers of the school were purposively chosen as the subjects, and the data were obtained through classroom observations and semi-structured interviews. The findings disclose that (1) in teaching vocabulary, the teachers employed four negotiation of meaning strategies; repetition, elaboration, simplification and comprehension check questioning, (2) the teachers used repetition to highlight the words which they wanted the students to focus on and to make the students familiar with the words, both elaboration and simplification to lead the students acquire the words naturally and to stimulate their critical thinking, and comprehension check questioning just to ensure whether the students understood their explanations, and (3) in the students’ perception, the teachers’ use of negotiation of meaning made the vocabulary learning enjoyable and helped them acquire new words. Thus, it can be inferred that (1) the teachers’ use of negotiation of meaning strategies was an absolute consequence of teaching vocabulary through meaningful interactions with the students, (2) the teachers’ purposes of using the four negotiation of meaning strategies were essentially integrated as a package of ideas of how to lead the students to achieve the vocabulary learning target, which was to acquire now words, and (3) the students have positive perception on the teachers’ use of negotiation of meaning in teaching vocabulary.
