Abstract

Mathematics learning in junior high school has important role in developing students’ ability in solving Math problems. Educators need to acknowledge the factors which influence students’ ability in solving Math problems, one of the factors is learning style. This study aims at describing problem solving ability of Math of grade VIII students at SMPN 1 Cina during the learning process by employing CTL approach on Two-VariableLinear Equation System material (SPLDV) based on learning style which refers to Kolb’ theory The study is descritive research with qualitative approach. The subjects of the study consisted of four students of grade VIII B at SMPN 1 Cina of academic year 2018/2019. The study was started by determining research subjects using IGB instrument to obtain subjects with convergent learning style (KV), divergent learning style (DV), assimilative learning style (AS), and accomodative learning style (AK). Afterwards, learning process was conducted using CTL for three meetings and the researcher acted as the observer to obtain the data during the learning process. After the learning process, the researcher gave test of Math problem solving to the subjects and conducted interview. Data validity of the study employed time triangulation in data process and technical triangulation in data result. The result of study reveal that (1) the DV subject preferred working in a group work and accepted feedbacks in solving the problems, (2) the KV subject was active in solving the problems by himself without help from others, (3) the AK subject showed that she preferred to have discussion with her group members, opened in accepting suggestions, and provided opinions to others in solving the problems, and (4) the AS subject preferred to process lots of information by reading the problems repeteadly to produce logical and definite solution. Those four subjects are able to solve Math problems based on Math problem solving ability indicator by Polya.
