Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims at explaining the students’ needs for learning materials of the Engineering students; and to describe the students’ perceptions towards the needs of learning English for engineering students at SMK Negeri 2 Makassar. The study employed quantitative descriptive. The sample of this study was the first grade students who take computer and network engineering field of study at SMK Negeri 2 Makassar. The instrument of this study was a questionnaire. It used Likert Scale to analyze the data of the questionnaire. The findings of the study showed that students’ needs for learning materials in English subject were both in receptive and productive skills. In learning a language, these both skills are needed to develop. Receptive skills is needed as students’ needs as learning materials while productive skills is needed as students’ needs as language production. The relationship between receptive and productive skills is a complex one, with one set of skills naturally supporting another. The findings of the research showed that in learning materials, students really need with receptive skills in terms of speaking and listening to build a good communication, a better relation each other which will help them in working after graduating their study in the school. In language needs, students really need with productive skills in terms of reading and writing to make a good report when they are at working world. Clearly, from the result, it can be said that students need English the most in their learning materials to have a better future.
