Abstract
ABSTRACT AHMAD ROSSYDI. English Debating as a Teaching Device to Activate the Second Year Students of Civil Aviation Safety Engineering Academy of Makassar to Speak English (Supervised by Muhammad Amin Rasyid and Syarifuddin Dollah) The objectives of this research were to: (1) describe the implementation of English debate as a teaching device in activating the students of CASEA Makassar. (2) know whether or not the second year students of CASEA Makassar are interested in speaking English through debate. This research applied mixed method, both of qualitative and quantitative analysis were applied. The population of this research is the second year students of Civil Aviation Safety and Engineering Academy of Makassar in academic year 2013/2014. There are three classes with 74 students. The classess consists of SATC VI, AEE IV, and FSO I and the Sample This research applied cluster random sampling to take two classes out of the three classes. One class is the experimental group and one more class is the control group. After a set of drawing, it is chosen SATC VI (Senior Air Traffic Controller VI) as the experimental group. This group consists of 24 students. And then, FSO I as the control group. This group consisted of 25 students. The data were collected by using observation checklist, speaking duration table and questionnaire. The results of this research reveal that (1) the cadets in Civil Aviation Safety and Engineering Academy (CASEA) Makassar can speak English more active through the implementation of debate, because English debating here do not apply as a teaching device to teach them to speak, but to make them familiar with the condition in order the students can increase their self-confidence, mood, interest, enthusiast and reduce their nervous when they want to speak and at last take effect on the students speaking duration and the use of words while speaking. (2) The implementation of debate is interesting to the cadets of CASEA Makassar because it was exiting, motivating and challenging the cadets to speak English. ix ABSTRAK AHMAD ROSSYDI. Debat bahasa Inggris sebagai suatu Media untuk Mengaktifkan Siswa Tingkat II Akademi Teknik dan Keselamatan Penerbangan Makassar untuk Berbicara Bahasa Inggris. (Dibimbing oleh Muhammad Amin Rasyid and Syarifuddin Dollah) Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk (1) menjelaskan implementasi Debat Bahasa Inggris sebagai media pengajaran untuk mengaktifkan siswa Tingkat II Akademi Teknik dan Keselamatan Penerbangan Makassar untuk Berbicara Bahasa Inggris. (2) mengetahui apakah Taruna Tingkat II Akademi Teknik dan Keselamatan Penerbangan Makassar tertarik untuk berbicara menggunakan bahasa Inggris melalui debat bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode Kualitative dan kuantitative. Populasi dari penelitian in adalah taruna tingkat II tahun 2013/2014. Terdapat 3 kelas dengan jumlah sebanayk 74 taruna. Kelas terdiri dari LLU VI, TLB IV, dan KP . Sampel dari penelitian ini adalah cluster random sampling, untuk mengambil 2 kelas dari tiga kelas. Salah satu kelas menjadi kelas eksperimental dan kelas kontrol, dan yang menjadi kelas eksperimen adalah kelas LLU VI. Kelas KP (Komunikasi Penerbangan) menjadi kelas kontrol. Kelompok ini terdiri dari 24 orang. Data diambil dengan menggunakan pengamatan, durasi berbicara, dan angket. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa (1) taruna ATKP Makassar dapat berbicara bahasa Inggirs lebih aktif melalui penggunaan debat, karena dalam hal ini debat tidak digunakan sebagai media pengajaran untuk menagjarkan mereka berbahasa Inggris, tetapi untuk membuat mereka terbiasa dengan kondisi. Agar taruna dapat meningkatkan percaya diri mereka, mood, ketertarikan (minat), antusias, dan mengurangi rasa gugup saat berbicara berbahasa Inggris. Dan pada akhirnya memberikan dampak pada durasi berbicara dan penggunaan kosakata dalam berbicara bahasa Inggris. (2) implementasi debat dirasa menarik untuk taruna ATKP Makassar karena menyenangkan, memotivasi mereka, dan menantang taruna untuk berbicara bahasa Inggris.
