Abstract

ABSTRACT The objectives of this research were: (1) to find out whether the use of Student Teams Achievement Division has significant effect in improving students’ achievement in reading comprehension and (2) to find out whether the students are motivated in learning reading comprehension by using Students Teams Achievement Division (STAD). This research employed quasi experimental design. The population of this research was the eight grade students of Model Makassar in academic year 2015/2016. This research used cluster random sampling. The sample of this research consisted of 70 students that belonged to two groups: 35 students in the experimental group and 35 students in the control group. The data were collected by using reading test and questionnaire. The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistic through SPPS 20.0 version. In conducting the research, the researcher used Student Teams Achievement Divisions (STAD) as a method to improve the students’ achievement in reading comprehension. Besides, the researcher used questionnaire to see the students’ motivation in learning reading comprehension by using Student Teams Achievement Divisions (STAD). The research showed that there was an improvement on the students’ achievement in pretest and posttest in experimental group after the treatment. The students’ result of posttest of experimental group is more significantly improved than the students’ result of posttest of control group by the mean score 80.1> 52.19. The difference of both scores is statistically significant based on the t-test value at significant level 0.05 in which the probability value is lower than the significant level (0.000 < 0.05). The mean score of the students’ motivation in the experimental group is 87.14 and it is categorized as strongly motivated. Thus, it can be concluded that the use of Student Teams Achievement Divisions (STAD) as a method significantly improved the students’ achievement in reading comprehension and the students were strongly motivated in learning reading comprehension by using Student Teams Achievement Divisions (STAD).
