Abstract

The objectivesof this research were to find outthe most dominant language learning strategies used by the student and to investigate the use of dominant language learning strategies to improve vocabulary achievement of the students. The population of this research is the second year students of SMK Negeri 1 Bulukumba, academic year 2014/2015. The study employed quasi-experimental designthat involved two classes as sample which was given different treatment. A sample of this research was taken by using cluster random sampling technique; 60 Accounting students of SMK Negeri 1 Bulukumba participated in this research. The results indicated that the most dominant language learning strategies used by the students was Compensation and followed by Affective, Metacognitive, Cognitive, Memory, and Social strategies respectively. The researcher used vocabulary test in pretest and posttest. Data analysis it shows the mean score of pretest in experimental class is 54,75 and mean score of control class is 54,41 .The mean score of posttest in experimental class is 77,58 and control class is 62,66, The score of the students in experimental class isgreater than the students in control class. The result of the t-test value in pretest is smaller than sig. (0,084 < 0.933) and the result of the t-test value in posttest is higher than sig. (7,22> 0.0001). It is indicated that there is significant difference of the students after the use of contextual analysis in improving their vocabularyand it is concluded that the use of contextual analysis based on the most dominant language learning strategies used by the students can improve the students’ English vocabulary achievement.
