ABSTRACT This research aimed at describing the expressions of impoliteness, factors causing impoliteness, reasons using impoliteness and effect of impoliteness in English classroom interaction at SMA Negeri 1 Sengkang. This research employed a descriptive research method. The participants of this research were 1 teacher and 28 students of SMA Negeri 1 Sengkang. The data were collected through video recording, and then transcribed to find out the impolite expressions by the participants. Besides recording, the participants’ conversation and interview result were aslo conducted to analyze the causing factors, reasons using impoliteness and effect of impoliteness in the classroom interaction. The findings of this research showed that the participants expressed impoliteness verbally in the English classroom interaction. Those expressions were categorized in four strategies of impoliteness. First, bald on record was employed by the teacher and students. Second, positive impoliteness employed by the students. Third, negative impoliteness employed by the teacher and students. The last finding of impolite expression is sarcasm or mock politeness employed by the teacher toward students. In accordance with new finding, the researcher found an impolite expression which is not explained by Culpeper in his strategy of impoliteness. The utterance of pitting or provocation was used by the student to provoke their friend’s emotion to make him angry. Furthermore, the finding of this research showed that there were three factors causing impoliteness by both the teacher and students; they are social status, age and social distance or familiarity. This research also found the reasons why the teacher and students used impoliteness in the classroom. The researcher found that joke, habit, irksome/dejected and counter attack were the reasons the teacher and the students employed impoliteness. Moreover, the last finding of this research was the effect of impoliteness toward the interlocutors. The researcher found that indifferent, annoyed/emotional, unwell feeling, and offended were effects of impoliteness toward interlocutors. This research showed that impoliteness used by the teacher and students in the classroom caused by some factors and reasons and effects on the hearers. In the future, it is expected that the teachers and students could avoid utterances that tend to be impolite and prefer to use a good utterances or more politely. So, the teachers and students can be speak politely and respectful especially in the classroom during lessson and the national education goals can be achieved.
