Abstract

The objectives of this research are (1) to analyze web-based English instructional material needed by students to promote independent learning at Indonesian university context, (2) to design web-based English instructional materials needed by students to promote independent learning, (3) to develop web-based English instructional materials which enables to promote students’ independent learning at Indonesian university context, (4) to examine the implementation of web-based English instructional material to promote independent learning, (5) to find out the effectiveness of web-based English instructional materials to promote students’ independent learning at Indonesian university context. To comprehend these objectives, the researcher employs an R & D (Research and Development) design by mixing quantitative and qualitative methods. This research is conducted at Faculty of Engineering Tadulako University. The subjects of the study are the lecturers who teach English for general course and the students of faculty of Engineering. Subject matter experts were also involved to validate the product. The data were collected through semi-structured interview, study the related documents, and the results of questionnaire distribution. The data in these phases were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. Based on the analysis, the research found that (1) the existing materials used by English lecturers for general English course are not in line with the students’ need and expectation. The students demand of learning materials are interactive and integrated with advance technology such as audio, video, and materials that access through internet, (2) In accommodating the students’ needs, the web is designed with interactive tools that not only attract students but also enhance the four language skills, (3) The web-based English instructional materials are developed based on the prototype design based on students preferences which supported by Moodle application, (4) Learning English through web-based instruction has created positive impact for both lecturers and students and lead students to be independent learners, (5) Based on the evaluation of learning objective achievement and the students’ opinion on the effectiveness of the web-based materials, both lecturers and students responded positively.
