Abstract

ABSTRACT Teacher’s professional competence development becomes very important in general area or study of education, it is probably because the professional competence development of the teacher plays an important role in their performance in teaching and the interaction with the students and other members of the school community. So, the problem statement of this research are: (i) What are the EFL teacher’s perceptions on the meaning of professional competence development? (ii) How do EFL teachers translate their professional competence development into their classroom teaching practice? (iii) How do EFL teachers develop their professional competence that contribute to their teaching? The research aims at (i) knowing and analyzing information about EFL teachers’ perceptions on the meaning of professional competence development, (ii) finding and analyzing how do EFL Teachers translate their professional competence development into their classroom teaching practice and (iii) finding and analyzing information about EFL teachers initiative to develop their professional competence that may contribute to their teaching. The research applying qualitative descriptive method in the form of ethnography study approach. The findings indicate that (i) EFL teacher’s perception on the meaning of professional competence development in SMA Negeri 1 Parepare are indeed very necessary and very helpful for successful process of teaching and learning that lead to increase the student’s interest of the material. (ii) EFL Teachers in SMA Negeri 1 parepare apply four sub categories in terms of competence practices in teaching classroom context, such as; Before teaching they do preparation where the preparation is necessary to help the EFL teacher maintain the momentum of the classroom circumstances, EFL teachers in SMA Negeri 1 Parepare qualities in teaching are they teach the four language skills and some language elements in form of integrated skills and they believe the skills and the elements them selves connect each other. EFL teachers in SMA Negeri 1 Parepare language use in teaching are they use both English and Indonesian in their teaching classroom context, Type of task and assignment the teachers give based on the important aspects of language that needs to be taught. They try to evaluate their students understanding on the material that have been taught in the classroom. The teachers even conduct evaluation whether incidentally, indirectly and in every gradual meeting. (iii) EFL Teachers of SMA Negeri 1 Parepare do some activities in order to develop their professional competence, such as; Professionally,They read many books about teaching, Join an English Meeting Club, Continue their study to the higher educational program, Pedagogically, Join professional development program, and participating In service training for teacher quality improvement
